Will capped or co-extruded composite decking fade? 2013-12-20

Dr. Composites here, we will be having a weekly or maybe daily depending on the amount of questions we get about composite decking and composite material in general.

Our first question will be from Jacob, in Seattle, he asks:

Will this new composite, they call capped or co-extruded, fade as much as the older generation of composite decking?

Well Jacob, that is a legitimate question that I have heard from a lot of people. This new capped layer product started around 2011 different compaines have different names for it, ours is called Ultrashield, Fiberon is called Pro-tect, etc. Different companies do different things as far as that top coating however the material that is used in the coating is very fade resistant. The only problem that might arise is if the manufacturer puts any filler such as wood flour in the coating as well. That filler would cause the overall coating to fade. Our product Ultrashield is a pure coat with no fillers at all. I am not sure about other companies but I'm sure a quick phone call to them will tell you.

Jacob, I hope that answers your question.
